Welcome to the Muggles Market Too Spotlight! Today, we are delighted to announce that Thirty Seven Stars will be an artisan for Muggles Market Too at Con-Tagion. Laura Stubbs took a few minutes to answer some questions about her business and herself.
What kind of items will you be selling at this year’s Muggles Market Too?
I make geeky and cute crochet figures that are great for all ages. Inspiration for them comes from TV, movies, video games, foods, animals, and everything in between.
How did you first get started making these things?
I needed to learn a new craft to keep my hands busy while I was quitting smoking in college. I heard about the Japanese style of crocheting (amigurumi) in one of my classes and thought I would give it a try. It was perfect because it took hours of frustration to learn and by the time I had the hang of it I hadn’t had time to have any cigarettes. After a few years I decided to quit my job and have a go at being a full time yarn slinger and I haven’t looked back!
What has been one of your favorite projects to work on?
It is so hard to decide! I get a wide variety of commission requests and I always love the challenge of figuring out how to make them come to life in yarn. The Needler from Halo, a violin, my Nyan Cat costume, and a chainsaw are all pretty high up there.
What else can you tell us about yourself?
My other passion is game making/event planning. I have run countless games of Humans vs Zombies (a giant game of tag that goes on over several hours or days), and made a live room escape game (participants are locked in a room and have to find a series of clues to get out). I love thinking of all the possible problems that could arise and working through their solutions. I think making a board game is next on the list.
