Welcome to Muggles Market Monday! Each week we are spotlighting one of the artisans scheduled to appear at our brand new Muggles’ Market at this year’s Geek Gala. This week’s featured artisan is Ambur Rose Designs. Ambur Rose took a few minutes to answer some questions about her business and general geekery.
- What kind of items will you be selling at this year’s Muggles Market?
Ambur Rose Designs creates fantasy-fairytale jewelry from carefully pieced vintage, retro, and other forgotten loved castaway parts. These one-of-a-kind creations range in theme from: Victorian, Fantasy, Art Nuevo, Wedding, Steampunk, Gothic, Mystic, and Eclectic.
- How did you first get started making these things?
Drawing and writing had always been a great past time. Writing fairytales was an obsession, but I hated the idea of drawing the same character more than once so illustration and story writing wasn’t a right fit. It came down to finding a different means to express art. By shrinking down my drawings, placing them into empty watch cases, and making them into an eclectic necklace with a story, was a breakthrough.
Those first necklaces were my light bulb moment. What better than to wear a fairytale of your very own with the telling of its magical story? Really quick, the evolution of mechanical composition took over drawing, to what’s presently created today.
Now not everything I create always has a story, but they are accompanied by a written history of how it came into being.
- What has been one of your favorite projects to work on?
It’s funny, but I say that about every creation I happen to be working on. I guess you could say every single one is a favorite!
- What else can you tell us about yourself?
If it wasn’t for the incredible support and encouragement of family and friends, This wouldn’t be. I’m truly grateful to do what I love.
Oh, and I’m a freak for Batman — Yes indeed, Batman rules!
- So this year’s Geek Gala is about space travel – if you could join any TV/Movie space crew – who would it be and why?
Star Trek — yes, indeed, the technology and geeky means of discovery and exploration does it for me. It’s a future where all mankind can get along and play with the greatest gadgets! I know that might seem a little odd from a standpoint of what I create, but it’s what we humans are able to do with our wits and imagination — not special powers — that really strikes a cord.
