Hey Geeks! The following news release is being announced to the public:
CHARLOTTE, NC – October 11, 2010 – The Charlotte Geeks officially announced today that NY Times best-selling author Carrie Ryan, Creative Loafing’s Editor-in-Chief Carlton Hargro, and “Charlotte’s Best Party DJ” DJ Spider will be the guest judges at the upcoming Geeks Got Talent! Contest.
This year’s Geeks Got Talent! Contest is the main event at the 2010 Geek Gala sponsored by Spandex City. Participants compete for a $100 cash first prize and other winnings by performing a 3-5 minute routine onstage. Points are awarded by the judges based on originality, dress/costume/character, sound/rhythm, audience interaction/participation and overall geek appeal. This year’s acts include singers, musicians, comedians, dancers and other performers.
Other events scheduled for the 2010 Geek Gala include Klingon Karaoke, Geek Trivia, bellydancing, geek-inspired carnival games, video streaming and the Geeky Goody Basket raffle. The 2010 Geek Gala is a charitable event, with all proceeds benefitting Youth Homes, a local nonprofit that helps troubled youth and their families.
This is not the only charitable effort The Charlotte Geeks have made. This summer they launched www.zombiesforlibraries.com, a viral video site hosting locally-made PSAs to support the Charlotte-Mecklenburg library system.
“It’s really important to us that we help out in the community,” explains Charlotte Geeks’ founder, Joey Paquette. “In this economy, we can often be tempted to cut back on our giving because our own pockets are a little lighter. We just can’t do that – this is when people need help the most.”
The Geeks Got Talent! Contest and the 2010 Geek Gala sponsored by Spandex City are on Saturday, October 30th at the Charlotte Marriott Executive Park. Doors open at 7 PM. Event Tickets are $20 online or $25 at the door. For more information, please visit www.charlottegeeks.com or email gala@charlottegeeks.com
