4,221! Con-Tagion Food Drive Results Are In

On Saturday, February 9th, the Charlotte Geeks with the help of the Queen City Harry Potter Alliance, hosted a food drive at Queens University Sports Complex. The food drive was a part of Muggles Market Too, the kid sister event of the Muggles Market held every fall. The Muggles Market Too was in partnership with Con-Tagion, a first year convention training authors and creatives on how to pursue their passion.

Admission to the Muggles Market Too was free, but attendees were asked to bring a canned good or donate $2 in lieu of a ticket. Everyone who donated received a raffle ticket and hourly drawings were held for fun items like bags of butterbeer popcorn from Tastebuds Popcorn, a house imp pillow from Nanny Dree’s Magical Creatures, a ceramic wand from Cursing Dog pottery and an original art print from Rich Sigfrit.

In total, 441 pounds of food and $540 were collected and donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. Lisa Marie Nisely, Community Development Coordinator of Food & Fund Drives, sent this email about the donation:

What WONDERFUL news to see this morning! We are thrilled the Charlotte Geeks and Queen City Harry Potter Alliance chose Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina as the beneficiary of this year’s Muggles Market food and fund drive.

Since we can distribute 7 pounds of much needed items for every $1 donated, the 441 pounds of food and $540 collected will provide 4,221 pounds of food and other essential items for neighbors in need!  It was all due to the forethought, kindness, and spirit of giving of your group.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina continues to supply about 700 charities feeding needy people in 19 counties in North and South Carolina.  In 2017-2018, the Food Bank provided over 54 million pounds of food and essential grocery items to these soup kitchens, shelters, emergency food pantries, low income group homes, children’s and senior programs.

We can’t thank you enough for the support and hope you’ll spread the word about how easy it is to make a difference with a food and fundraiser for the food bank.  Because of you and your group more seniors, children, men and women throughout our 19 county area will be fed.    There are no words to convey the importance of your continued kindness.

The Charlotte Geeks are grateful for the opportunity to help our local community through the Muggles Market and Muggles Market Too. We hope you will join us for our next event and food drive on Nov 2nd.
